Chinese officials are positioning the nation as a dependable partner in trade and development, particularly in contrast to the unpredictability stemming from Trump’s tariff increases and related policies.
Following discussions in Geneva, Switzerland, over the weekend, Beijing and Washington announced a significant development regarding tariffs. They agreed to suspend excessively high import duties for a period of 90 days to facilitate further negotiations.
Despite this truce, China’s frustration over the trade conflict remains evident. During a meeting with officials from Latin America, Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated that trade wars yield no winners and emphasized that “bullying or hegemonism only results in self-isolation.” Having taken steps to ease tensions with the U.S., Xi expressed China’s readiness to collaborate with Latin American nations to confront the rising challenges of political confrontations, unilateralism, and protectionist tendencies.
