Promoter Eddie Hearn has announced that the highly anticipated rematch between welterweights Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan will not take place at Windsor Park due to financial considerations.
Crocker emerged victorious in the initial encounter held at the SSE Arena in March, a fight that ended in controversy. Donovan, who was leading on the scorecards, was disqualified after being deemed to have punched Crocker after the bell at the end of the eighth round. This was compounded by previous infractions, as Donovan had already received two point deductions for headbutting during the match.
Subsequently, the IBF accepted an appeal from Donovan’s management, mandating an immediate rematch.
While there were hopes of hosting this bout at Windsor Park home to the Northern Ireland national football team and Linfield.
Hearn now indicates that the event is more likely to return to the Odyssey Arena.
In a statement to The Ring magazine Hearn remarked, “The chances of holding the rematch at Windsor Park are diminishing. We are leaning towards the arena instead. The financial implications of hosting an outdoor event necessitate ticket sales exceeding 20,000 to justify the costs compared to a venue with a capacity of 9,000.
That’s a significant target. Realistically, the event might attract 15,000 to 16,000 attendees. While I have a strong appreciation for outdoor events, there is also a compelling argument for the electrifying atmosphere that a packed arena can provide. The energy during the previous fight was exceptional, and I anticipate an even more intense environment for the rematch.
We are currently finalizing details with both fighters and it is expected that the rematch will take place in late August or early September, with the arena as the most probable location.”
Crocker remains undefeated in 21 bouts, while Donovan’s record now reflects the reversal from the IBF after his singular loss due to the aforementioned disqualification. Meaning both men have undefeated record on the line once again.
